Rocky Point to be site of festive CEDO fundraiser

A fiesta at Rocky Point, Sonora, in October will blend dancing and dining with a serious purpose: the campaign to secure the beachfront home of CEDO, the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (Centro Intercultural de Estudios de Desiertos y Océanos).

The “Home Sweet Home” fiesta starts at 5 p.m. Oct. 13 at CEDO headquarters in Las Conchas, just south of Rocky Point, and it will include auctions, raffles and a Mexican-food buffet.

The goal is to raise $50,000 to pay costs of a land settlement reached this year to protect the site in Las Conchas. The nonprofit’s research and conservation work on the Gulf of California go back more than 25 years.

Among the items to be auctioned will be tickets for an excursion into the Gulf of California for whale-watching and other wildlife observation, three nights at the Sonoran Sea condominium in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) and an array of paintings and sculptures.

Tickets for the fiesta are $25 per person. Reservations must be made by Oct. 8 at
