The rains and mudslides that decimated Brazil in recent days has left desolate fields, however, the story of Leao or caramel as some call it is a reflection of the desolation that has gripped the country.

Leao was a street dog that was rescued by the family of Cristina Cesário Maria Santana who lived in Teresopolis, one of the areas most affected by floods and landslides.

When the house of Cristina Cesário Maria Santana and three other family members was carried by a landslide, Leao could get out alive, but the four occupants of the house died.

At the moment we arrived the rescuers found Leao searching for the remains of their owners, which were found by the intervention of the dog.

Now that the three occupants of the house where he lived the dog have been buried, Leao has refused to leave the makeshift grave of Cristina Cesário in the pantheon of Teresópolis, while its image covers Brazil and the world as a silent witness to the tragedy who lives south of the continent

Finding a new species is one of the moments that scientists crave. Time magazine made its selection of the top 10 discoveries of species in 2010.

Then the list.

1. “Mr. Burns? A tiny frog with an aquiline nose that hides among the dead leaves in Colombia ranks first in the British magazine. Rhinella belongs to the genus and was found in the tropical forest of Chocó department.

In addition to its strange appearance, is quite unusual because it skips the tadpole stage, laying eggs on the forest floor that hatch directly as young frogs.

The color and head shape make the frog look like dead leaves on which they live and the only two individuals found measured no more than two inches long, said Robin Moore, Conservation International (CI)

2. Spider prevented. A spider weaves a web Madagascar as strong as silk so amassed an enormous reserve, compared to other arachnids, food. The scientists found a web of 25 meters to cross a river on the island.

3. Ant high altitude. One of the 200 species found in Papua New Guinea was the ant that found that can accommodate both hot and dry climates, cold or humid. The trick of this insect is that their slow metabolism allowed him to get the most out of anything to eat.

4. Grasshopper glamorous. Of the more than 30 grasshoppers they found in Papua, said one with pink eyes and green skin, also equipped with unusually large and spiny legs used as weapons against predators.

5. Rana pea. German and Asian scientists found the smallest frog known so far as they sang in carnivorous plants on the island of Borneo. The Microhyla nepenthicola adult has a size of 10.6 to 12.8 mm.

6. Green and clear. Many frogs avoid dissection to learn anatomy being like this specimen found in Ecuador. The family member Centrolenidae skin is so transparent that you can see the heartbeat.

7. Giant rat. Researchers found a rat the size of a large adult cat also in Papua New Guinea.

8. Intergalactic. The bat also named Yoda lives in the Pacific island and their diet is based on the fruit.

9. Lineage. The new species of tarantula living in French Guyana has the characteristic of having blue teeth.

10. Huge and tuxedos. The fossil of a penguin living in Peru revealed that the ancestors of this bird stood nearly five feet and feathers were gray and brown reddish tones are associated today with young penguins, not adults

Mexico has 200 thousand endangered species

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Over 200 thousand species of flora and fauna are threatened and endangered species in Mexico, which threatens the country’s mega-biodiversity, environmental agencies reported.
The Mexican Center for Environmental Law (Cemda) said in a statement that there are 500 endangered species and about 700 in the category of threatened.
The list of species “endangered” rose from 372 in 2001 to 500 in 2010, said the statement also signed by Defenders of Wildlife agencies in Mexico, Teyeliz, Greenpeace, and Ecological Group of Mayab COMARINO.
Cemda A spokesman told Efe that among the species most at risk of extinction is the vaquita, a porpoise endemic to Mexico of which it is estimated that there are over 600 individuals and currently dying between 40 and 80 species caught in marine networks.
Also in danger is the Mexican wolf, which the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified as Extinct in the wild.
They also include most turtles that inhabit the coast and are seriously threatened, as is the case of the few remaining copies of the Carey Turtle, because despite being banned from hunting and trade, trafficking and illegal trade continue to hamper the small population of turtles that live in the Caribbean Sea.
Among the ecosystems at risk are mangroves, which are reserves or breeding centers of species such as shrimp larvae, in addition to buffer effects of weather, prevent global warming, are filters and clean water, the spokeswoman said.
For its part, the program director of Defenders of Wildlife Mexico, Juan Carlos Cantu, said, “the official figures are alarming, as over 40% of terrestrial vertebrates are at risk of extinction.”
The president of the organization Teyeliz, María Elena Sánchez, said that among the species of parrots and macaws, 50% are endangered, adding that the “decline of wild populations of parrots is mainly due to the legal exploitation and illegal. ”
In turn, the campaign coordinator for Greenpeace oceans and coasts of Mexico, Alejandro Olivera, said the official rules of this country are ineffective, “to provide legal protection to wild species.”
The environmental groups agreed that since the establishment of the standard Semarnat official in 1994, “the number of species at risk has increased and now the number of endangered species has soared.
Cemda president, Gustavo Alanis, said that to preserve the number of wild species is necessary to promote non-extractive use patterns, habitat protection and refuge areas and protection of private and public.
You must also stop the entry of invasive alien species and carry out comprehensive environmental education programs with the population, because “otherwise Mexico will be a mega diverse country in species and ecosystems to a mega small and barren.”

Astronomer finds new sign of the zodiac, the Ophiuchus

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

A professor of astronomy at Minneapolis says that those born between November 29 and December 17 will correspond Sagittarius Ophiuchus and not as previously believed
The astrological calendar is a mistake, said a professor of astronomy at Minneapolis, while he found a thirteenth sign, Ophiuchus (Ophiuchus), carrying the snake.
For those born between November 29 and December 17 will correspond Ophiuchus and not Sagittarius as previously believed, according to Professor Parke Kunkle, disseminates Los Angeles Times.
“Ophiuchus appears long in the sky and the sun passes for thousands of years by the holder of the snake.”
This new order of the signs of the zodiac does this through a new calculation of the orbit.
“I define the signs as the stars that are at the bottom of the sun and the moon.”
Professor Parke Kunkle had said that the Earth’s changing orbit means the planet is no longer aligned with the stars in the same position as when the signs were created.
This means, he added, that when astrologers say the Sun is in Pisces, Aquarius is actually in, for example.
Before publication, thousands of people who are concerned that your sign might be another, circulated statements Kunkle through social networking sites.
However, the professor of the Technical University and Minneapolis Community, said Friday that this information is two thousand years old.
Shelley Ackerman, a spokeswoman for the American Federation of Astrologers, said he received many emails from concerned customers, but assured them that”this does not change your astrological chart for nothing.”
According to Kunkle, so would the new timetable for horoscopes:

Capricorn: January 20-February 16
Aquarius: February 16-March 11
Pisces: March 11-April 18
Aries: April 18 to May 13
Taurus: May 13-June 21
Gemini: June 21-July 20
Cancer: July 20-August 10
Leo: August 10-September 16
Virgo: sept. 16 – October 1930
Libra: October 30-November 23
Scorpio: November 23-November 29
Ophiuchus: November 29-December 17
Sagitario: Dec 17 – Jan. 20

Virtual wall falls billion in U.S. border

United States canceled yesterday the project of “virtual fence” that was intended to strengthen surveillance in sections of the border with Mexico and replace it with other security measures.
The project, managed by Boeing Co, has cost so far one billion dollars, approximately, and seeks to bring together technology of cameras, sensors and radar to detect those who attempt to cross the border illegally.
The Homeland Security secretary, Janet Napolitano, said that instead of the “virtual fence” surveillance systems be used on the market, unmanned spacecraft, thermal imaging, among other teams, after key suggestions made by critics of Boeing program SBInet.
“This new strategy is tailored to the unique needs of each border region, providing a faster deployment of technology, better coverage and more effective balance between cost and capacity,” he said in a statement.
The government of President Barack Obama has been under pressure to enhance security and stop the illegal flow of migrants crossing into the United States and to reduce the smuggling of weapons and drugs.
Last year enacted a $ 600 million to finance the hiring of one thousand 500 new Border Patrol agents, customs inspectors and other officials at the border, and pay for two additional unmanned aircraft.
He also ordered the deployment of some 200 thousand National Guard troops on the southwestern border to support security.
The SBInet project did not exceed the time and costs are exceeded. The fruit of the project had been in doubt after facing criticism from Democrats and Republicans, and even by Napolitano.
An evaluation of Boeing released by the Department of Homeland Security found that they have spent billions of dollars just to cover the 85 kilometers of security along the border in Arizona.
The new scheme should cost less than $ 750 million and will cover the rest of the border of that state, about 520 kilometers, said the U.S. government.
“The decision to use technology in a particular need for border security is a much wiser and I hope to be effective,” said Sen. Joseph Lieberman.
Chancery involving Central American countries in kidnapping

“It is a transnational crime that is not born in Mexico originates in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador, and can not attack unilaterally. Only if we work and act in responsible manner and together we can confront this scourge, “said Rubén Beltrán Guerrero conference, Assistant Secretary for Latin America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
He insisted that in Central America and Mexico are immigration recruiters and criminal cells involved in the abductions.
“There is a regional Mexican phenomenon but it is not a state policy (against immigrants) but actions of transnational crime,” he said.
Fresh from a tour of Central America, which met with Guatemalan and Salvadoran authorities to discuss the kidnappings of migrants, Beltrán Guerrero insisted that the problem can not be tackled unilaterally.
Reported Guatemalan and Salvadoran officials whom he met, agreed on shared responsibility.
The official also wanted to define the use of the word abduction, from their point of view, is already used in a “very liberal”, and the same for robberies than for extortion. But “I do not deny that there are kidnappings,” he said.
She then asked that witnesses to the alleged plagiarism occurred in Chahuites, Oaxaca, on 16 December, “we provide the names of the 50 hostages.”
Father Alejandro Solalinde, director of the shelter, “Brothers in the road,” he said earlier that it is impossible for the witnesses to know names of the hostages, if only they could reach safety
