Public Services and Security In Puerto Penasco Being Equipped And Reinforced

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Eight new police cars delivered to help improve security in Puerto Peñasco

By Ivan Bravo Lopez
Issue #450

To bring greater security services and to reinforce surveillance in Puerto Peñasco, municipal authorities delivered eight new police vehicles to the Public Safety Department. They also equipped them with other assorted equipment valued at more than 5 million pesos (~$457,000 USD).

The symbolic delivery of the police units took place in the parking lot of one of the facilities of the Municipality. It was directed by Mayor Heriberto Rentería Sanchez, who expressed his concern for having a safe and secure port in which safety for its citizens – along with strong cleaning efforts project the dignified image of a rapidly growing port.

The new units are six Ford Pick-up squad cars and two Crown Victoria sedans, years 2000 to 2003. They also received 45 cell phones, which will be distributed to different sectors of Puerto Peñasco. The Mayor Heriberto Rentería delivered the equipment to enhance security to the Municipal Director of Public Safety, said Salvador Alvarez.

The Mayor along with the Municipal Secretary and other authorities present formally delivered to the Municipal Public Services new equipment to continue with the cleaning projects and improve the image of Puerto Peñasco. They received 2 dumpsters, 1 motorgrader, 2 sweepers, 2 branch disposal machines and a steam machine. The total investment was of 5 million 217 thousand pesos (~$476,000 USD).

“We want to have a well guarded Puerto Peñasco. This is part of the credit investment that we received from Banobras (Mexico’s National Works and Public Services Bank). We will continue to equip Public Safety and Public Services – they are the ones that need the most support – as well as the ones that we use the most. We already know how that feels from the Governor’s Conference. During that time, security was tighter and there were less criminal incidents.”

He also mentioned that in 2008 they will implement higher efforts for Public Safety to lower crime rates. While it is quite difficult to monitor all the neighborhoods, homes and businesses, but with the help of more equipment and more human resources, it can be done, he said.

He recognized that federal resources to enhance security will be given as soon as the crime rates decrease. That is the requirement for this Municipality to receive the resources.

Director of Public Safety Salvador Alvarez recognized the positive disposition and interest that the municipal authorities have on the improvement of Public Safety. He promised to care for the maintenance of the equipment and to provide the community the safety that they deserve. Lastly, the Municipal President took a tour around the installations of the municipal parking lot aboard a sweeper to see the good condition of the equipment. They will be used to keep the public peace and to help with the cleaning efforts.

A little about Amor and what we have done

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Amor Ministries is a non-profit organization working in Mexico. Amor constructs clinics, schools, churches and homes for the Mexican communities of: Tijuana, Cuidad Juarez, and Puerto Peñasco. The majority of the families receiving assistance from Amor Ministries have a weekly income of $60 US. They are living in shacks with dirt floors and walls made from scrap wood.

The projects being built have a cement foundation, walls framed from 2″x 4″s, a strong weather resistant roof and a stucco finish. The average home built by Amor is 11’ x 22’ with two rooms. Clinic, schools and churches are larger structures. The structures are a free service provided to the families and communities of Mexico. This construction is done by volunteers from the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Puerto Peñasco, Sonora Mexico:

2005: 2 churches, 1 vision clinic, and 93 homes were built.

2006: 5 churches, 1 clinic, 1 rehabilitation center and 89 homes were built.

Jan-August: 2007: 2 rehabilitation centers, 1 clinic and 51 homes have been built.

Along with the construction provided by Amor Ministries, a food bank for the communities of Tijuana and Juarez was also established. The food bank provides: flour, sugar, powdered milk, beans, rice, and other staple needs to Mexican families needing assistance. Again, this is a free service for the families and the communities of Tijuana and Juarez Mexico. The resources for the food bank come from the donations of people in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Flights proposed from Southern California to Rocky Point

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Direct flights have been proposed to originate from Southern Californias LA/Ontario airports to destination Rocky Point.

The proposed flights are from airline carrier AeroMexico and would be provided by the carriers regional airline Aerolitoral. It is still unclear if these flights would originate from LAX, Ontario or both. The plan is to fly a 33 seat plane three times a week between Southern California and Rocky Point International airport. The current airport only has two runways, one asphalt and one gravel. The flights could begin as early as next month.

This is exciting news as this begins to open up the Southern California market to Rocky Point and increase the Rocky Point Reservations. According to reports, the flights will be subsidized in some capacity by time share and condo developments in town. However, this has not been confirmed by Reservations at the Point. The moment flights begin, a follow-up article will be released.

Aeromexico to add Southern California-Puerto Penasco route

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007
Aerolitoral, the regional subsidiary of Aeromexico, is likely to offer a service between LA/Ontario International Airport and Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

According to the Press Enterprise news agency, the carrier is expected to offer a 33-seat flight three times per week between the Southern Californian airport and the Mexican resort.

Katharina Calbes, a representative of Los Angeles firm Blaze PR told the agency that the Aerolitoral was in negotiations concerning the flights, and could potentially offer a service from both LA/Ontario International Airport, and LAX.

She also asserted that the service would be subsidized by the tourism developments ongoing in the resort in Sonora, on the Gulf of California.

Gabriel Huerta, Assistant to the Director of the Mexico Tourism Board’s Los Angeles office, told Press Enterprise: “The local facilities are very excited about this flight. It promises to bring in more tourists, more people to the area.”

Officials from LA/Ontario International Airport would not confirm the flight.

Shops, Stores, and much, much more!

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

One question we seem to get often is, “Where is the best place to go shopping?” Well, that’s a tricky question. Rocky Point has a variety of Shops, Specialty Stores, and Beach Vendors that sell just about everything. You will be able to find jewelry, clothing, ceramics, furniture, sun glasses, and so much more, I promise! People always ask about a place called “Saks Fifth Avenue” and “Rodeo Drive”, which has recently taken on a new look. Rodeo Drive, which is the original Cholla Bay Rd, is now paved in front of all the shops. Here are some photo showing how it use to look, and how it looks now!

If Rodeo Drive just didn’t do it for you, then how about driving over to the Malecon. The Malecon is a wonderful ocean front area with shops & stores, and a bunch of wonderful Restaurants. This is also the place to go if you want to buy some fresh Seafood for your return home.

Now, on the way to the Malecon, on the right side of the road, is a small group of shops call Las Palomas, (not to be confused with the resort). This is another option for some take home souvenirs. (No photos)

Now, if it’s a store you need for supplies like beer, soda, water, ect.., that is no problem at all. Their are stores on every corner in Rocky Point, including 2 new Circle K Stores.

Now, what do you do when your just too tired to walk around town, or your having too much fun on the beach, but you have to get some sun glasses or earrings before you leave on Sunday?!… You let the shopping come to you. All you have to do is head to the beach, set up your chair and umbrella, and just sit back and relax. Next thing you know, their will be a man or woman standing over you asking if you want to buy one of their items for sale. Its that easy! Beach Vendors are perfect for all us “lazy folks” who still want to shop, but we don’t want to have to get out of our chair to do so.

Another wonderful store that you may not know about is the Drive Thru Liquor Store. This is a lazy man’s dream come true!

Another question we get often is about Pharmacies in Rocky Point, and about what you can and can’t but over the counter. It is our understanding, if you have a written prescription from a doctor, that you can get your perscriptions refilled in Mexico, if the medication is available. If you do this, you MUST tell them at the Mexico/US Border that you do have prescription medicine with you that you had filled in Mexico. If you say no when asked, and they end up searching you and find it on their own, you will be in serious trouble!
