In February, 2009, Puerto Peñasco will host the women’s amateur golf tournament for US universities. This will be the first time the event is held outside of the United States.
During a press conference, it was reported that Rocky Point Golf Course “Sea of Cortez Peninsula Arizona Wildcat Invitational,” championship tournament, which traditionally has been held in Tucson, AZ for the past 20 years, will host 90 young golf hopefuls who will soon be competing in the ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA).
Shelly Haywood, Golf coach from the University of Arizona and former professional golfer, highlighted that Puerto Peñasco was selected given its tremendous hospitality and the affection she and her country women have for this beautiful beach destination. The area, she explained, in addition to having beautiful natural attractions, has a professional golf course built by living golf legend, Jack Nicklaus.
The tournament will highlight the participation of the best amateur female golfers from various US universities including Duke, UCLA, Arizona, Tennessee, the Trojans from southern California, UNLV, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Tulsa, Stanford, and Washington, among others.
It is important to mention that the University of Arizona is one of the most competitive universities in the United States and was home to Mexican professional golfer Lorena Ochoa, who today is part of the LPGA and number one in the world.
Haywood mentioned that currently there are two other young promising golfers from Mexico on the Arizona team: Margarita Ramos and Alejandra Llaneza.
The manager of Mayan Palace Puerto Penasco golf, Manuel Alcocer Perez, stressed the event will be a launching point to promote Puerto Peñasco as an important destination for tourism.
He believes this port has the potential to be a golf destination, given the courses that already exist and those currently under consideration of promoting events of a global scale such as this.
Epifanio Salido Pavlovich, State Coordinator for the Promotion of Tourism, similarly noted the potential the golf market represents for the area, which is one of the sports with the most followers currently in the U.S.
He stated that tournaments such as this, set to take place from Feb, 21 – 24, 2009, represent the possibility to attract more visitors to Puerto Peñasco and therefore he committed the support of the State Government, as well as that of the municipal and federal governments, in continuing to promote alternatives such as this.
The Sea of Cortez Peninsula, Arizona Wildcat Invitational will take place at Mayan Palace Puerto Peñasco and is a free event for participants.
In addition to showcasing the best female golf hopefuls in the U.S., it will provide golf clinics for local children and youth from Peñasco.
During the press conference it was announced that the company NIKE, sponsor of the event, would be presenting at least 20 packages of equipment to local youth who show an interest in the sport.
Also present at the press conference were Edward Gowan, Executive Director of the Arizona Golf Association, and the Manager of the Peninsula of Cortez Golf Course, Andrew Gilchrist.
