Las perspectivas de éxito depositadas, a penas a mediados de la década pasada, en el primer desarrollo hotelero en el municipio, se han visto incrementadas abrumadoramente con la presencia incontenible de múltiples mega proyectos que le han dado un giro espectacular a la vocación primaria de esta joya sonorense. La fisonomía del puerto se ha modificado rápidamente dando paso a modernos y lujosos complejos hoteleros, elegantes condominios y torres de departamentos, así como exclusivos desarrollos residenciales.

En forma paralela, los servicios turísticos complementarios se han multiplicado en forma significativa: restaurantes de especialidades, comercios, asesores inmobiliarios, campos de golf, arrendadoras, recorridos turísticos, servicios de salud, talleres especializados y todo lo que conlleva un crecimiento de esta magnitud. Es tan acelerada la construcción de nuevos proyectos inmobiliarios, que rápidamente se requiere la incorporación de mayores y mejores servicios de esta índole.

No es de sorprenderse, entonces que el joven municipio este acaparando los mayores índices de inversión en nuestro país y en buena parte del mundo.

Es probable que cualquiera que no conozca Puerto Peñasco y haya leído con atención hasta este punto, llegue a concluir que en el corto plazo se habrán agotado sus márgenes de desarrollo tal como lo hemos expuesto. Nada más equivocado.

Puerto Peñasco es grande en todos los sentidos y en relación con su proyección futura, podemos afirmar que su crecimiento actual es incipiente. Así lo han visualizado los analistas y lo han entendido los grandes empresarios, quienes han cifrado la confianza de sus inversiones en nuevos y espectaculares proyectos que llamaran no solo la atención, sino también la llegada de nuevos capitales hacia los distintos sectores relacionados.

Lo anterior es el panorama presente. Están en puerta los ambiciosos proyectos de un aeropuerto internacional, la carretera costera y la escala náutica correspondiente a dicho puerto, en el marco del proyecto Mar de Cortés. Seguramente cuando estos hayan consumado su completa realidad – que ya inicio -, estaremos hablando de un futuro mucho más halagador todavía.

The Scenic Loop Road brings you in from behind A Mountain, gives you a final over view of Ajo, then returns you to Highway 85, about 0.7 miles West of the starting point.

MILE 0.0, The Plaza, set your odometer or write down your mileage. Head South for Organ Pipe National Monument.

MILE 2.4, Darby Well Road, sign is on the right. Turn right onto Darby Well Road and you are now heading straight for Black Mountain, the big one.

MILE 4.3, junction of Darby Well Road and Scenic Loop Road, this intersection is unmarked but it is obvious, parts of deserted buildings on the right – this is Darby Well. Caution: Occasionally campers will leave an arrow or something on cardboard to their friends. Disregard! Take the right hand road and from this point on, always stay on the best road. To the south, Balancing Rock will be most noticeable from here. The rock pile, overburden removed from the mine, will be on your right. Ahead are great desert view both near and distant.

NOTE: When stopping to take pictures, or to get a better view, pull carefully to the side of the road or park on a side road. Do not pull off the road into the desert!

MILE 6.1, Junction, Mica Mine Road, (unmarked) cuts to the left, but go straight ahead and stay on the main road. Organ Pipe Cacti start to appear among the Saguaro and Ocotillos.

MILE 7.0, The Pillar and Wind Swept Rock, on the left. The Pillar sits against the east face of North Ajo Peak (2776 ft.) and is back in, but Wind Swept Rock is quite close.

MILE 8.1, View of back of “A” Mountain “, (cross on top). “A” Mountain’s official name is Camelback Mountain, elevation 5,573 feet. Here there are Elephant Trees on the right side of the road. Organ Pipe Cacti everywhere!

MILE 9.0, Scenic Loop becomes paved and shortly it becomes Rocalla Avenue.

Air operations expected to increase

As part of the development and evolution of the international airport in Puerto Peñasco, on October 10th a station to provide fuel to planes was opened, a move that is expected to further help with the growth of the airport operations. Airport manager Alonso Domínguez Ruiz said that to begin with they would have a portable tank for 12 thousand liters of air fuel for piston planes, and shortly be adding another pipe for up to 12 thousand liters of turbo fuel for turbine planes.

He explained that the plan is to have two stationary tanks of 40 thousand liters each for December of this year or by January 2007, with the idea to meet the fuel demand that is sure to increase over the next few months. This service, he added, as well as effective security, is of the utmost importance as operations have increased by 30% since September of last year when the airport was reopened. Furthermore, local investors are very interested in purchasing their own airplanes.

Alonso Domínguez Ruiz said that previously the airport had received 5 or 6 incoming flights per day and now the rate is between 9 to 10 or even more. The airport manager said that the development of the airport includes related services, such a pilot school from a group in Hermosillo that intends to open a campus here, as well as an aeronautic mechanic shop.

Alonso Domínguez Ruiz confirmed that the local airport has the category of an entrance air port, which is being verified both in the United States as in Mexico. There had been a rumor stating the opposite but the situation is being remedied so that flights to the area will not see a decrease.

As many people are aware, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was created to help strengthen security at our borders. It will require U.S. citizens traveling by land from Mexico to present passports or another accepted form of identification upon entering the U.S. by January 1, 2008.

What type of documentation will be required to return to the U.S. at that time?

All travelers will be required to present one of the following to an officer upon returning to the U.S.:

• U.S. passport
• Passport card
• SENTRI pass*
• Border Crossing Card (or “laser visa” for Mexican citizens)
• NEXUS program* (used along Canadian borders)
• FAST program* (for commercial truckers) *At this time it is anticipated that the SENTRI, NEXUS and FAST programs will be acceptable for re-entry, although this has not been completely confirmed.

I’m familiar with a U.S. passport, but what is the new passport card?

The new passport card will be able to fit into your wallet, like a driver’s license, making it easy to carry. It will be perfect for frequent travelers who cross land borders between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. The card will be a less expensive alternative to a passport, yet it meets the requirements of a passport when traveling by land. The new card will use biometic technology meaning it will have a computer chip containing the information of the traveler as well as a digital image of the them.

When will the new passport card be available?

The State Department is currently developing the program and is looking to have it implemented by the end of 2006.

I know passports can be expensive for a family, what will be the cost of the new passport card?

They believe the passport card will cost $50, although it may be less expensive if possible. This makes it about half the cost of a U.S. passport.

Can I use this card when I return to the U.S. by air or sea?

No. The card is only for land crossings.
