CEDO stands for Centro Intercultural de Estudios de Desiertos y Oceanos or in English: The Cultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans. CEDO is a non profit organization located in Las Conchas near the Cet Mar aquarium. They have been in Rocky Point since 1980 and in 2007, won the National Conservation award for Mexico. Their main focus these days is trying to help save the Vaquita Marina, literally the little sea cow, as it is the smallest porpoise in the world; only living in the waters of the northern Sea of Cortez. The Estuary and the Sea 

Cedo offers tours of the estuaries as well as tours to Bird Island. These tours are invaluable as you can learn from biologists about the marine life and plant life of the area. They also offer tours to Pinacate, the huge crater left my a meteor many years ago. See the related post for more on Pinacate.

Entrance to CEDO 

If you are looking for something to do outside Rocky Point, going to the Pinacate Reserve Biosphere is the perfect way to spend the afternoon or even overnight! Situated just about an hour north of Rocky Point (halfway to Sonoyta) the Pinacate craters were formed by a series of volcanoes spewing hot lava over 4 million years ago. Today, Pinacate and its Biosphere, located in the Gran Desierto de Altar is home to many species of animals and plants found no where else in the world! There are lots of guided tours by foot, 4×4 truck, or ATV for your learning and enjoyment experience!

Pinacate at Sunset 

There are nine huge craters formed by this explosion so long ago, covering a little more than 600 square miles. It is the largest Maar crater in the world, forming such a moon like environment that the astronauts from the Apollo 14 mission trained right here! The whole area is dormant right now, and it attracts a large number of visitors from all over the world including scientists and tourists alike.

You will see the entrance to the Biosphere on your right hand side as you head south to Rocky Point. Tours and entry times vary based on the time of year, but you can find out all this information on their website. This is defiantly a Rocky Point activity you should consider on your next trip down!

The Rocky Point Rally is an annual event held in the town of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico that showcases motorcycles and other 2-4 wheel vehicles.

The Rocky Point Rally, “Gran Fiesta de Motocicletas,” is also known as the Rocky Point Motorcycle Rally or Rocky Point Biker Rally, or Ralley.

Over ten thousand people from around the world gathered last year to watch parades and contests between motorcycles and other recreational vehicles.

- Wednesday
1.- Welcome shot at Tequila Factory: We’ll be waiting for you, regardless what time you arrive. Between 9am – 9pm stop by the Tequila Factory for a fun time of free Tequila Tasting. Experience a wide selection of flavored tequilas and learn all there is to know about tequila! Located on the main drag (Benito Juarez Blvd.) in the big blue building just past the turn to Calle 13 (and ALL bikers know Calle 13, right?)

2.- Early Bird Party at The Black Dog: $1 Margaritas! Yes, that’s one dollar Margaritas from 6pm – 8pm at the famous Black Dog on Fremont Blvd. Great food and $2 Bloody Marys. Karaoke from 7pm.

- Thursday
1.- Desert Oasis Biker Registration Party: Registration starts at 9am, so if you get here early, plan on having breakfast at the Oasis. $2 Bloody Marys, Margaritas and Piña Coladas! Tell your friends to meet you here and then ride into town together. Kick off your Rally with a Party at the Oasis…

2.- Welcome shot at Tequila Factory: See Above!

3.- Make the Rounds and Win a Weekend in Rocky Point: The Camel Toe Cantina, Thirsty Parrot, Jerry’s Place, The Black Dog, The Sandbar and Manny’s Beach Club will have tickets for a drawing. - Saturday

4.- 6:30pm Low Seas Biker Sunset Cruise: The owners of the Carnaval, Rocky Point’s biggest party boat have reserved the whole boat for a wild Biker Sunset Cruise! Food, Beer, Full Bar and Entertainment, as we take the party out onto the water! For two hours you will enjoy the beauty of Rocky Point from the ocean side… secure parking for your bikes.

5.- 7pm – 2am 2 for 1 Night at Manny’s Beach Club: That’s right…all night long you’ll drink twice as much for half the price! Don’t worry folks. If your not a Pirate, Tony will allow you and your guest on the ships too! What ships, you ask? The Rey Del Mar Sunset Cruise Pirate Ships! Tony and his family started a sunset cruise charter service a few year ago, and now they have the only 2 Pirate Ships in Rocky Point. Captain Tony also offers Day Trips and Private Charters, so bring the whole family and make it an unforgetable adventure. My wife and I have had the pleasure of taking 3 cruises with Tony so far, and we have had a great time on each. The staff is very helpful, doing their best to make sure your drinks are full, and that you are enjoying yourself in every way possible. They even have different contest for the guys and girls, and the ”gentlemen pirates” perform and dance for you also. It’s a hoot! On all 3 cruises we took, we have seen Dolphins within the first 30 minutes, just before the sunset. Later, before heading back to port, Tony has hired these 2 beautiful women, who are Dancers from Sinaloa, Mexico, and they will dance for the guest on the cruise. They wear these colorful flowing dresses as they dance, spin and twirl together perfectly to the wonderful music chosen from Sinaloa. At the end of it all, before heading to port, Tony will shoot off some Grande Boomer Fireworks of the top of the ship, giving you a great ending to a magical night. Here are photos we put together from several Sunset Cruises we have enjoyed.
