Access to Pinacate closed off
Access to Pinacate closed off following heavy rains
100 kilometers of road under repair
Staff worked on fully restoring internal roads, which they estimated to be stretch along about 100 kilometers.
Torrential rains registred in the area of the Pinacate, along with repeated accidents and problems caused by vehicles getting stuck on reserve roads, led the Pinacate Biosphere and Desert of Altar Reserve to temporarily close off visitors access to the volcanic zone, reports a recent press release.
The closure encompassed the natural protected area including craters, ash plains and lava flows, for a 10 day period beginning on September 25th.
During this time, staff worked on fully restoring internal roads, which they estimated to be stretch along about 100 kilometers, as well as the construction projects to control sediment and erosion.
Pinacate directives asked for understanding and support, as the closures were done with the sole aim of offering all users better safety, comfort and ways of enjoying the natural protected area considered to be one of the 13 wonders of Mexico.
The press release notes that while it is true that the rains caused considerable damage to access roads in the area of the Pinacate, their impact is actually positive and of tremendous benefit to the vegetation and wild life.
In addition, it helps to decrease temperatures, refill underground aquifers (which provide fresh water throughout the entire region), and fill natural reservoirs between rocks, better known as tinajas (bowls or tanks), that form a part of the important water cycle.
